In an era where people increasingly rely on various online platforms for planning activities, including demonstrations, cyber-attacks, and potential terrorist acts, the issue of encryption has become a subject of national security and intense political debate. The question of whether the government (security agencies) should have access to the public’s encrypted data through special access backdoors has sparked contentious discussions. Conversely, others argue that encryption is preventing security agencies from intercepting or accessing criminal communications.
Amidst this complex landscape, our proposed training workshop for Global Encryption Day 2023 is sub themed “Empowering Voices: Safeguarding Free Expression and Privacy through Encryption.” Our workshop aims to shed light on the vital role encryption plays in protecting journalists, civil society organizations (CSOs), and digital rights defenders. By fostering awareness, knowledge sharing, and collaboration, the workshop seeks to empower participants to better understand and effectively use encryption technologies to safeguard free expression and uphold privacy in the digital age.
