MEPs Pledge in Favour of End-to-End Encryption (E2EE)

As Members of the European Parliament, we recognize the vital role that end-to-end encryption (E2EE) plays in safeguarding the privacy, security, and fundamental rights of European citizens.

End-to-end encryption (E2EE) is the cornerstone of secure communication in our digital age. It ensures that personal data, confidential information, and private communications remain protected from unauthorized access, preserving the integrity of both our online and offline lives.

E2EE plays a critical role in protecting fundamental rights such as freedom of speech and the right to privacy, as recognised by the European Court of Human rights. E2EE ensures that individuals can express their views without fear of surveillance or censorship.

Finally, E2EE also safeguards the personal security of Europeans and the national security of Member States. It prevents spies, terrorists, and hostile governments from accessing confidential communications and systems, boosts the competitiveness of our industries, and strengthens our national security and infrastructure.

As such, any attempt to compromise, weaken, or ban E2EE would expose millions of Europeans to new vulnerabilities, putting their privacy and security at serious risk.

By signing this pledge, we affirm our commitment to an open and secure Internet and dedicate ourselves to being advocates for strong encryption within the European Parliament in this legislative cycle by:

  • Advocating for safeguarding end-to-end encryption (E2EE)
  • Opposing any initiatives that aim to weaken or undermine end-to-end encryption (E2EE)
