Global Encryption Day is an annual day of action, when civil society organizations, businesses, technologists, and millions of Internet users across the world come together to promote, protect and defend strong encryption. It is an opportunity to demonstrate why strong encryption matters. Global Encryption Day 2022 will take place on 21 October 2022.
The Global Encryption Coalition (GEC) is organizing Global Encryption Day to help champion strong encryption around the world and build a global movement of partners that can strengthen each other’s efforts to promote the use of strong encryption and prevent dangerous attempts by governments and law enforcement agencies to undermine it.
In the days leading up to Global Encryption Day, we’re running the Make the Switch campaign. We want you to participate by pledging to Make the Switch to end-to-end encrypted services and platforms and to help champion strong encryption and encrypted platforms and services to your communities. The Make the Switch campaign will culminate on Global Encryption Day itself.
By pledging to Make the Switch to end-to-end encrypted products or services, you’ll join thousands of people around the world who have taken back control of their online privacy and security, sending a collective message to governments around the world that when encryption is weakened, all of us are put at greater risk.
No app or platform can perfectly meet everyone’s security and communication needs, so it is not possible to make recommendations without considering the details of a particular person’s or group’s situation. Apps, platforms and legislation change regularly, so what is correct today might not be correct tomorrow. We can however, recommend that you take these steps to protect yourself. You can also see why these companies are proud to offer secure services to their customers.
Read more about why it’s difficult to recommend which end-to-end encrypted app to use in this article by Global Encryption Coalition (GEC) member Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF).
Encryption is the process of scrambling or enciphering data so it can be read only by someone with the means to return it to its original state. It is a crucial feature of a safe and trustworthy Internet and it helps provide data security for sensitive information. End-to-end encryption is the most secure form of encryption that you can use. End-to-end encryption is any form of encryption in which only the sender and intended recipient can read the message. No third party, even the party providing the communication service, has knowledge of the encryption key. Find out more about encryption and how it works.
Encrypted platforms not only keeps you and the people you love safe from hackers and thieves, but also improves the security of the Internet as a whole. That is why every person, business and organization should Make the Switch to using strong encryption by Global Encryption Day.
Some organizations and governments are pushing to weaken encryption as a means to fight crime. This not only undermines efforts to prevent crime but creates a dangerous precedent that compromises the personal security of billions of people and the national security of countries around the world. Find out more about why encryption is under threat.
